Design In A Bordertown

Ed Fella is a revolutionary postmodern thinker. His ideas are something that can be read into and understood on many levels. For his quote, “design in a bordertown” I was challenged to create a visual on my interpretation of these very insightful words. As with any of Fella’s quotes you can go many directions with your interpretation and accompanying visual of them.
As I researched the work of Ed Fella I became very interested in process and way he challenged how we think. His postmodern approach has led him to create visuals with multilevel concepts. And his questioning of rules and procedure keeps his work fresh. I was especially interested in the work that he created while using only typefaces that rhymed. Doing so created a unique visual that was dictated by this early decision.
In the production of this poster I wanted to challenge the way in which visuals are chosen in relation to the subject. Working with the abstracted concept of the six degrees of separation I approached strangers and asked them to name the first three nouns that came to their mind, one person, one place, one thing. Because you can find a relationship in anything I related the nouns with the use of a mind map. I chose to hand letter the mind map to get the more personal qualities into the piece, I then photographed the poster to further blur the line of visuals by mixing three styles of media, hand drawn, bit map image and vector art.
