Because graphic design is in a constant evolution it is important for contemporary designers to be familiar with various aesthetics & the tools necessary to apply them. From printmaking to web design, vector illustration to black & white photography Steven has made it a mission to become versed in all the edges of the design medium, keeping them in his arsenal of ideas, applications & aesthetic.
Design is about the communication that takes place, the research that goes into shaping a successful project, & the multiple mediums in which Steven works. It has become a way of looking at things, a different approach on how to address problems, & a platform to understand & express vastly different ideas and concepts. Steven has a passion for the design process & loves to conquer complicated design projects.
Steven’s design strives to experiment with many different aesthetic styles. For him, working with vastly different subject matters does not allow for his design to have a predetermined application. Rather, his work is developed through research & analytical thinking, often making itself accessible through historical knowledge or contemporary issues.
Steve early work concentrated on exploring photography on a film and digital level, video production, recording & editing, as well as web design. The knowledge that Steven gained during this elementary experimentation has allowed Steven to better understand his strengths & weaknesses.
Though Steve has now learned to take the rules & bend them in his favor, it was the formalistic undergraduate training that has shaped Steven’s ethics as a designer. During this time a large emphasis was placed on composition, color theory & conventional applications.
Currently Steven is enrolled in the graduate program at the Savannah College of Art & Design where he is pursuing an MFA in graphic design. His graduate level time is helping Steve to become well versed in the history of design as well as contemporary movements. This opportunity has allowed Steven to become a more conceptual thinker and multi-layered communicator. His work is beginning to push out of his formalistic roots to a more expressive style.
As Steven has grown he has learned that a well-rounded background has helped him become a better designer. He likes being able to combine many different media into one project. As Steven continues to evolve in graphic design he becomes increasingly impressed by the power of the medium, & the value of good design in society. He is always excited to learn more about how people process design, how they become inspired, & what new ways they are learning to do things.
